To better help you choose your products and especially your shampoo, choose one that does not contain the following ingredients that are very dangerous for health.
6 carcinogenic ingredients in some shampoos:
1 - Propylene glycol
Propylene glycol is a compound that we find in many beauty products such as shampoos, masks, creams, anti-acne treatments, etc. Its role is to reduce the density of these products and change the properties of your skin in order to facilitate access to active the ingredients which are found in your bloodstream.
In doing so, propylene glycol also allows the penetration of other chemicals which enhances the emergence of several functional disorders and serious diseases. According to Environmental Working Group, propylene glycol is associated with an increased risk of immunotoxicity, reproductive and developmental disorders, as well as an increased risk of cancer. In addition, several studies have shown that 2% concentration of this substance is the cause of skin sensitization, irritation and urticaria, while some products may contain up to 50% in their composition.
2 - Sodium laureth sulfate
Sodium laureth sulfate is a foaming agent used in shampoos, cleansers for the face, crockery liquids, etc. According to a study whose results were published in the Journal of the American College of Toxicity, exposure to this substance can cause eye and skin irritation, worsening depends on its concentration in the used products. In addition, sodium laureth sulfate may contain amounts larger or smaller than 1.4 dioxane, a substance classified as a carcinogen.
3 - 1.4 dioxane
This substance is widely used in the oil sector, since it aims to reduce the risk of skin irritation for people who work with petroleum-derived materials. It is also a component of many cosmetics such as foaming agent. Now a regular exposure to 1.4 dioxane may cause irritation to the skin and respiratory tract, and increases the risk of developing cancer. The 1.4 dioxane has also been classified as a carcinogen category 3 by the European Union and is in Group 2B of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which contains the list of potential carcinogens to humans.
In addition, a US study said that several cosmetic products which labled "natural" revealed to have the presence of this substance in 46% of them. However, exposure to high levels of 1,4 dioxane can cause dizziness, headaches, eye irritation, throat, skin and respiratory tract.
4 - Parabens
Parabens are preservatives used in many food products and cosmetics. Their primary role is to prevent the proliferation of harmful bacteria so as to prolong the life of products. However, their chemical composition similar to that of the female hormone estrogen, which allows them to mimic the effect thereof in the body.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, a concentration of 25% in paraben is harmless to health. Whereas, a recent study published in Environmental Health Perspectives showed that even mild exposure to these additives, can promote the development of breast cancer tumors, if it is combined with other substances in the body.
Thus scientists created tumors in laboratory and supplemented them with small doses of parabens and heregulin, a substance naturally present in breast tissue. The results showed that this combination tenfold power of parabens tumor activator and the amount of the latter necessary to stimulate the proliferation of cancer cells was 100 times lower than in cells not containing by heregulin.
5 -The AED diethanolamine
AEDs are substances whose main role is to reduce the acidity of the constituents of the creams and other cosmetics, as well as modify their texture to make it frothy and creamy. They are classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic substances. They can interact with nitrites and thereby form carcinogenic nitrosamines. Moreover, in Canada, it is prohibited to include diethanolamine AED in cosmetics.
6 - The methylisothiazolinone
It is a new synthetic preservative that helps to fight against the proliferation of bacteria in cosmetics. This is a major allergen that mixes with the composition of many products used without rinsing, which extends its contact with the skin and increases its irritant effect.
It also has a disruptive effect on the endocrine system, causing estrogen and thyroid disorder. Moreover, the American Society of Dermatology warns against the growing number of skin irritations and eczema cases after using this substance.
Thus, to avoid exposing yourself to the dangers of these substances, it is advisable to turn to healthier natural alternative that are less dangerous for your health, or to certified organic products, or at least, to read the composition of your beauty products before buying them.
