Warning Signs Of Lung Cancer Should Not Be Ignored

Cancer is considered one of the leading causes of death in the world. This pathology, which can affect various organs and tissues of the body, develops discretely, without manifesting any specific symptoms. Lung cancer including, which is one of the most prevalent, is a silent killer. Focus on the causes and signs of this disease.

Each year, nearly 900,000 new cases of lung cancer are recorded in men, compared with 330,000 in women worldwide. It is one of the most common types of cancers and the leading cause of death in men.

Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the cells of this same organ. Also known as bronchopulmonary or lung cancer, lung cancer is caused in 80 to 90% of cases by smoking. While it was predominantly male, women are beginning to suffer more and more as a result of rising female smoking rates.

There are 2 types of lung cancer:

Non-small cell lung cancer: this is the most common type and is easier to detect and treat. This form of lung cancer develops more slowly and has 3 subcategories, including: squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and undifferentiated large cell carcinoma.
Small cell lung cancer is a less common form of lung cancer (20% of cases), but much more dangerous. Indeed, it is more aggressive and is characterized by a more rapid multiplication of cancer cells, which can lead to metastasis.

Causes and Risk Factors:

As mentioned above, smoking remains the leading cause of lung cancer. Of course, the risk varies according to different parameters: the number of cigarettes consumed daily, the age at which the person started smoking, the duration of smoking, and so on. Thus, for a person who smokes two packs of cigarettes per day, the risk is higher by 50%.

Note, however, that passive smoking also increases the risk of developing lung cancer by 30%. This is the main risk factor for non-smokers.

In addition to passive and active smoking, other factors may contribute to the development of lung cancer, namely:

- Exposure to airborne carcinogens, such as arsenic, asbestos or other air pollutants
- Cannabis, pipe and cigar.

Lung Cancer Symptoms:

Lung cancer can develop without distinct symptoms. However, specific signs should alert and lead to a doctor's visit. Here are the main symptoms of lung cancer:
  • A cough that gradually worsens and persists
  • Wheezing
  • A hoarse voice that lasts more than three weeks
  • Blood sputum
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Chest pain that intensifies by coughing or breathing deeply
  • Weight loss
  • Shortness of breath

Later clearer symptoms may appear, thus announcing that the tumor has taken up more volume and that it has spread to other tissues or organs of the body. Here are some signs that can alert:
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Inflated glands in the neck
  • Bone pain

Diagnosis and prevention:

To detect lung cancer, chest X-ray is the most commonly used test. When the doctor detects an abnormality, he proposes to the patient to do a scan. Then, he proceeds with a bronchial fibroscopy which makes it possible to distinguish the lesions and to take a part to analyze it during the biopsy. When the diagnosis falls: lung cancer, the doctor prescribes the necessary treatment.

Avoiding smoking remains the main preventive measure. It is also recommended to avoid exposure to carcinogens and to adopt a healthy lifestyle
