 Prostate Cancer Symptoms
Prostate cancer is considered the most common type of cancer in men. Causing about 10,000 deaths a year, it is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in men after lung cancer and colorectal cancer. Prostate cancer develops slowly and often silently. However, some specific symptoms can detect it. Here are the 12 symptoms that men should not ignore.

The prostate is a gland forming part of the male reproductive system. Surrounding the urethra and located exactly under the bladder, the role of the prostate is to produce the seminal fluid and store it.

When the normal cells of the prostate are transformed and begin to multiply in a completely anarchic way, this is called prostate cancer. These cells develop abnormally and eventually constitute a mass, a malignant tumor.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men over 50 years of age. It is estimated that 1 in 7 men will be affected by this disease.

Until now, no precise cause of prostate cancer has been discovered, but this disease would be favored by a genetic predisposition. There are different forms of prostate cancer, with adenocarcinoma being the most common type. In fact, it represents more than 90% of the cases diagnosed and develops at the level of the cells which form the tissue of coating of the prostate.

People at Risk and Risk Factors:

Prostate cancer affects mostly men over the age of 50, but the average age of diagnosis is 70 years. Men with a family history are more likely to develop this type of cancer. Indeed, the fact of having a brother or a father who has already suffered from this disease announces a genetic predisposition.

Finally, ethnicity can also be implicated in the prevalence of prostate cancer. African men are more at risk than Caucasians and Asians. Indians and Chinese are 50% less likely to develop prostate cancer.

Concerning the risk factors, two main points are mentioned by the professionals of the health. These include smoking and poor nutrition. Indeed, a diet high in fat, especially red meat and processed, increases the risk of prostate cancer.

Symptoms of prostate cancer:

During the early stages, prostate cancer does not cause any symptoms. But the more the tumor spreads, the more distinct the symptoms become. Here are 12 symptoms that should not be ignored:
  1. A frequent need to urinate, especially during the night
  2. A difficulty in starting urination
  3. A lower flow of urine
  4. A burning sensation while urinating
  5. Pains in the hips, lower back and upper thighs
  6. Painful ejaculations
  7. Numbness in the feet and legs
  8. Erectile dysfunction
  9. The presence of blood in the urine
  10. The presence of blood in the sperm
  11. Discontinuous urine flow
  12. A difficulty in retaining urine

Prevention of prostate cancer:

To prevent cancer or other illnesses, it is important to have a healthy lifestyle: having a balanced diet, practicing sports regularly, and avoiding smoking, stress and excessive alcohol consumption, among others .

To protect against prostate cancer especially, it is advisable to avoid eating processed meats and limit the consumption of red meats. Doctors recommend early screening, starting at the age of 50 years.

Finally, vitamin D supplementation is strongly recommended to prevent this type of cancer. Indeed, different studies have proved the effectiveness of this vitamin to reduce the risks of prostate cancer and many other types of cancer.

Thus, taking vitamin D supplements would be beneficial in winter and autumn, periods when one is least exposed to the sun. However, it is recommended to consult your doctor before taking these supplements.
