 Fibromyalgia Mystery

Touching more than 2 million people in Canada, fibromyalgia remains an unrecognized pathology. This disease, which mainly affects women, is defined as a group of symptoms that are often very painful and cause terrible fatigue that can sometimes be disabling. Its exact causes remain unclear to date, but a team of researchers made an incredible discovery that made it possible to see more clearly. Let's do a check in.

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that results in pain affecting the entire body. These are often accompanied by fatigue and problems of insomnia. Although this problem does not cause serious complications, it does affect the quality of life of those who suffer from it. Indeed, fibromyalgia may in some cases prevent the subject from performing his daily tasks.

Recognized by the World Health Organization since 1922, fibromyalgia remains an unrecognized pathology. Moreover, in the scientific world, opinions diverge when the existence of this disease!

Generally, fibromyalgia mainly affects women and occurs between 40 and 60 years of age.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia:

The main signs of fibromyalgia are diffuse pain throughout the body, but other symptoms may manifest themselves in each case.
  • Morning stiffness and muscle pain
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Digestive disorders
  • Tingling and numbness in the feet and hands
  • Non-restorative sleep
  • Headaches
Fibromyalgia, the causes involved:

Although recognized as a pathology for years, the causes of fibromyalgia remain unrecognized. Indeed, despite the pain experienced by the patient, the doctor can not find an inflammation or lesion that could be the cause of these signs.

It can therefore be deduced that fibromyalgia results from a set of factors. Several studies have investigated the causes of fibromyalgia and have thus advanced different hypotheses. In general, two types of causes can be distinguished:

Physiological: a viral infection, a disorder of the immune system, a hypersensitivity to pain

Psychological: Fibromyalgia is often linked to an initiating element such as trauma, stress, anxiety, depression ...

Despite the different studies carried out, it remains difficult to determine the exact cause of this disease. A group of American researchers has made an incredible discovery that could change the perception of this disease.

Fibromyalgia: everything is in the hands!

Researchers from the Integrated Tissue Dynamics LLC (INTiDYN), a biotechnology company supported by University at Albany's East Campus in Rensselaer New York, made a new discovery about this unknown disease.

The study by these researchers was published in the journal Pain Medicine and succeeded in determining the first physical pathology that can provide a logical explanation for the debilitating symptoms of this disease.

The analyzes were carried out by Dr. Frank L. Rice and other researchers and demonstrated that the causes of this pathology are not due to a psychological problem but rather to the presence of a large number of sensory nerve fibers around Blood vessels of the palm of the hand. This discovery represents concrete evidence of the existence of a specific pathology causing fibromyalgia which can henceforth be used to diagnose this disease. According to the researchers, the nerve endings present around the blood vessels in the palm of the hand not only regulate blood flow but also contribute to our sense of touch and pain.

The latter are located in specific places, which form a direct connection between the arterioles and the veinlets, hence their name arterioles-veinules (AV).

Normally, VAs are mostly on the hands and feet. Recall that these two parts of the body receive a large amount of blood and serve as reservoir and then distribute it to the other tissues of the body like the muscles in case of physical effort.

Fibromyalgia, what treatment?

There is no precise treatment for the pathology itself. Doctors prescribe medications to relieve pain. Thus, non-steroidal painkillers, painkillers and anti-inflammatories are administered to patients.

They can also take sedatives, antidepressants as well as muscle relaxants.
