Poor oral hygiene can be the main cause of bad breath. Often, curing bad breath requires no more than a toothbrush and a good toothpaste. But when it becomes "chronic", it can be cured by natural remedies. Before you present this remedy, zoom on this very common problem.

What is bad breath?

Bad breath, or halitosis is a very common discomfort that can affect people of any age. It is usually caused by naturally occurring bacteria in our mouth. These bacteria are living organisms derived from the endogenous flora. They are responsible for the decomposition of proteins, food debris and certain infections. This decomposition generates volatile sulfur compounds that are responsible for bad breath.

Good oral hygiene is the best weapon against bad breath. It makes it possible to dislodge the remains of foods which are the ideal meal of the bacteria.

What are the other origins of bad breath?

Caries and infections of the mouth, such as canker sores and abscesses can cause bad breath.

In the case of chronic sinusitis, the presence of mucus in the sinuses can be the source of bad breath. These mucus that flow from the nose to the mouth can have a bad odor.

The formation of small holes on the surface of the tonsils can be the source of bad breath. The dead skin of the mucous membranes and the food debris are lodged in these holes causing bad breath.

Unhealthy diet and digestive problems can be part of the causes of malodorous breath. Gastric acidity, inflammation of the esophagus and ulcer of the stomach can result in a fetid breath.

Excessive buccal dryness can also be the cause of bad breath. The decrease in saliva production does not allow the proper elimination of bacteria accumulated in the mouth. This dry mouth may be due to dehydration, so you should drink water regularly.

Taking certain medications and treatments may change the composition of the bacteria found in our mouth and this is what causes halitosis.

During pregnancy or ovulation, hormones increase the secretion of dental plaque which can be responsible for bad breath.

Regular consumption of tobacco and alcohol is one of the causes of bad breath.
