Scientific Research Has Shown That Your Mother Will Live Longe

While some older people are lucky enough to always be surrounded by their families, others find themselves alone in their last years of life. Whether they live alone in a house or in a retirement home with many other seniors, these people often feel abandoned and live in solitude. A feeling that can impact their health and increase the risk of premature death, according to a study.

Depending on their family situation, their culture and traditions and many other factors and circumstances, seniors can live alone or on the contrary be welcomed by their families. In this case, these people are usually cared for by their family members, who offer them care, attention, support and more importantly: they keep them company.

On the other hand, in the case where these people live alone, they are left to themselves. They do most basic daily tasks such as shopping, cooking ... this of course if their state of health allows it. But the fact that they are independent does not mean that these people enjoy living alone. On the contrary, most of them live in solitude, especially if no one visits them. This gnawing feeling may over time cause deterioration in their health and may even increase the risk of premature death, according to various scientific studies.

What does science think?

According to a study by University of California San Francisco, loneliness is linked to serious health problems as well as death among seniors.

The research team analyzed data from a representative Health and Retirement Study conducted by the National Institute on Aging on 1,604 people with a mean age of 71, from 2002 to 2008. The researchers were careful to limit the age of participants to 60 years and over.

This study, published in The Archives of Internal Medicine, focused on the impact of loneliness on older adults. Among the most surprising discoveries of researchers, it is the fact that the feeling of loneliness is not always linked to living alone. Indeed, the research results showed that 43% of those surveyed said they live in loneliness, while only 18% of them live alone.

The study also found that people who saw themselves as loners had a 59% risk of deteriorating health. These people also have higher risks of 45% death.

Another study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, also looked at the issue of loneliness in older adults and its results were almost the same as those of the aforementioned study. This study analyzed the lifestyle of 6,500 people over 52 years old for more than 7 years. The latter were asked to answer various questions concerning their income, social life, family situation ... Throughout the study period, the researchers monitored their health status and classified them into two groups: those judged as isolated and those who have a normal social life. Taking into account existing health problems and age, the researchers concluded that isolated people had a 48% higher risk of dying.

Loneliness, this devastating feeling:

Based on the above studies, it can be concluded that loneliness and isolation of older people greatly affect their health and may even increase the risk of premature death, regardless of their health status or age. .

Thus, the importance of a fulfilling social life and of a regular social contact is no longer to prove. This can have specific biological consequences that play an important role in maintaining health.

It is therefore important to make greater efforts to help older people integrate into society. Remember that poverty, health status and many other factors contribute to the feeling of loneliness and isolation.
