Doctors remove a protuberance from this baby's face!

Valeka Riegel, 46, was shocked when she saw her son for the first time. Most of her face was covered with a huge outgrowth that prevented the mother from seeing the eyes of her little baby.

Of course, the parents were worried when they saw their son's ultrasound for the first time.

They discovered that the baby was suffering from encephalocele, a brain protuberance that is extremely rare. According to the CDC Public Health Agency, only about 1 in 12,200 babies are born each year in the United States with this condition.

The first time Valeka's mother saw her son, she did not stop crying. There was only one large protrusion and tiny little lips, no eyes, no nose, no lashes ...

Little Zakary was generally healthy, but he had trouble breathing and eating because of his protuberance. He was transferred to a pediatric hospital in Cincinnati where 22 doctors operated on him to remove this outgrowth from his face.

After a long and complicated operation, the emotional mother was able to take a look at her son, who was fit and healthy. The protuberance had disappeared and the little boy could breathe and eat without any problem. When she saw the incredible transformation of her son, she could not stop crying.

Valeka explains that she cried because she did not think that her son had such beautiful long lashes and big brown eyes.

The mother explains that little Zakary had a hard time accepting that this weird thing on his face had suddenly disappeared, because he kept patting his face and searching for the big ball that prevented him from looking.

What is encephalocele?

Encephalocele is a rare type of congenital neural tube defect that affects the brain. The neural tube is a narrow canal that develops during the formation of the fetus. It allows the brain and spinal cord to grow. Encephalocele is a protuberance or projection of the brain type and membranes that cover it with an opening in the skull. Encephalocele occurs when the neural tube does not close completely during pregnancy. The result is an opening located anywhere along the center of the skull, from the nose to the back of the neck, at the top of the head or between the forehead and the nose.

The causes

Although the exact cause of encephalocele is unknown, scientists have been able to highlight possible factors including:

Genetics: Encephalocele often occurs in people who have family members with other neural tube defects.

Exposure to specific environmental factors during pregnancy: The researchers were unable to identify specific environmental factors but they continue to believe that certain toxins or infections can cause encephalocele.

Prevention and Treatment:

Experts continue to study how to prevent birth defects such as encephalocele and believe that for example taking 400 micrograms of vitamin B, folic acid, every day before and during pregnancy can help prevent some abnormalities major congenital brain and spine of the baby.

The encephalocele is surgically treated to place the protruding part of the brain and the membranes that cover it in the skull and close the opening in the skull. However, neurological problems caused by encephalocele will still be present. Long-term treatment depends on the health status of the child. Several surgical procedures may be required, depending on the location of the encephalocele and the parts of the head and face that are affected.

If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, talk to your doctor about ways to increase your chances of having a healthy baby.
