During the pregnancy period, parents tend to speculate about the gender of the child. But in some cultures and societies, the distinction between the two genders goes beyond the mere preference for achieving discrimination. There are then families where seeing a girl born within her represents a shame and an unacceptable situation whose repercussions could be disastrous for the family reputation.

The biological point of view

In principle, every pregnant woman is as likely to give birth to a boy as a girl. Knowing that the one that really makes the difference is the father and not the mother, because it is he who is responsible for the transmission of the chromosome essential to the determination of the gender.

Each cell of the human body has 23 pairs of chromosomes, including a pair of gender chromosomes. The woman has two X chromosomes, which gives us an "XX". While the man has an X chromosome and a Y chromosome, which gives us an "XY". During fertilization, when the egg and sperm merge, the mother systematically transmits an X chromosome, while the father can transmit either an X or a Y. And according to what the man has transmitted, the child will be either a girl with an X from the mother and another X from the father, or a boy with an X from the mother and a Y from the father.

When ignorance can lead to abuse

Shocking video footage revealed the moment when a woman was horribly attacked by her in-laws for giving birth to a girl rather than a boy. The victim, originally from India, was allegedly the victim of a dowry dispute.

Recorded from the top of the stairs, the video shows the screaming woman as she is beaten with hockey sticks on all sides. In the screenshots of the recording, we can see two men: his brother-in-law and one of his friends, blaming the victim.

Identified as Meena Kashyap, the 35-year-old victim was beaten after her husband's family discovered that she had complained about the violence they had experienced against her in April. Local media revealed that the woman from Punjab's Patiala gave birth to a daughter, something her husband's family refused to accept.

When injustice and tradition intertwine

As a result, the woman was beaten. It was also relayed that the couple was also involved in a disagreement around more than 700 000 rupees the equivalent of about 8000 euros. Apparently, the money was donated by the bride's parents to her new husband's family. In fact, the dowry is traditionally given to a bride who will live with her new partner as a way to support her new family. It is granted instead of "regular inheritance".

But unfortunately, this traditional system is generally used as a means of income for the husband's family. And obviously, extra demands are often made even after marriage and often focus around the birth of a child. That said, dots are technically illegal. For the simple reason that thousands of women are killed and abused for payments that their in-laws require. A system that still remains widely practiced in India. The father of the victim stated that he and his family had lodged a complaint last year but that nothing had been done. Charges were brought against the wife's husband, Daljit Singh, as well as his brother Kamaljeet and his friend Gaurav. They are accused of "intrusion" and "violence and willful injury".

The video became viral immediately and provoked many reactions not only in India but around the world. The vast majority of the comments were aimed at denouncing such violence and ignorance that makes one believe that a mother is responsible, voluntarily or involuntarily, for determining the gender of the baby.

Such incidents are certainly chilling but remind us of the cultures where blind tradition dominates everything, including common sense and justice. So share this to remember that there are companies where awareness about married life should be seen as a priority!
