Cold Water Or Warm Water One Of Them Is Bad For Your Health

The reflex of most people is to drink a glass of cold water in the morning on an empty stomach. However, according to many scientific studies, it would be better to consume it rather lukewarm in order to benefit from all the therapeutic benefits that it can bring to our organization. To this end, Dr. Hervé Janecek, speaker on the theme of "What water should you drink" presented at the International Congress of Naturopathic ICNM, said that the factor of the temperature of the water consumed in the morning on waking is of great importance. Thus, drinking warm, fasting water warms the body, facilitates digestion and has many other virtues, especially in terms of weight loss. This thesis is corroborated by Ayurveda (Traditional Indian Medicine) which advises to drink warm water at any time of the day, even after meals such as herbal teas for a better digestion or to reinvigorate during a period of convalescence.

Benefits of warm water

Ease the pain
Warm water helps reduce inflammation and pain in the throat. Thus, from the first ingestion, the effects are felt and the throat becomes hydrated, less dry or irritated. Likewise, it helps reduce nasal congestion. In addition, warm water helps to relax muscles, soothe stomach cramps and fight against menstrual pain with its calming and soothing effect.

Improve intestinal transit
Nothing better than drinking a glass of warm water to stimulate the colon and facilitate international transit. A recent study in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility has demonstrated this fact, by an experiment tested on a certain number of patients suffering from achalasia (difficulty of swallowing because the oesophageal and sphincter muscles do not relax after swallowing thus preventing foods to get to the stomach) that have experienced a great improvement relative to this symptom.

Improve blood circulation
Drinking warm, fasting water helps warm the body and improve blood circulation. Thus, the warming of the body allows the increase of the flow of blood cells in the circulatory system of the body.

Losing weight
It is well known that the consumption of water promotes weight loss, but lukewarm drinking makes it even more effective. The Journal of Natural Science, Biology and Medicine, has proven this hypothesis by conducting a study on a group of overweight women. There was a significant decrease in weight, loss of appetite and body mass index (BMI) in most women who drank lukewarm water daily.

Relieving constipation
To avoid constipation suffered by a large majority of people, there is no better than warm water, waking to stimulate the intestines and eliminate cramps and bloating.

Detoxify the body
With warm water, the blood is purified and the body can release toxins through the skin, kidneys and lymphatic system.

The disadvantages of cold water
During the hot summer days, the glass of cold water is always welcome, to refresh, hydrate and bring our body the necessary water intake for its proper functioning. However, it would be important to emphasize that despite the stated benefits of cold water, it also has disadvantages to our body.
  • Cold water tightens the blood vessels and reduces hydration.
  • With cold water, the body is more solicited for the digestion of food. Indeed, after a meal, cold water condenses fat which makes digestion slower.
  • Cold water causes excess mucus in the respiratory system and can cause congestion and infection of the throat; it can also damage the immune system, allowing exposure of the body to diseases such as influenza.
  • When you drink cold water, the body provides more energy to heat that water to body temperature and use it. This mechanism causes, as a result, a loss of water.

Thus water that is warm or cold is essential for the body. However, it should be emphasized that water should not be consumed too hot. The temperature of the water should be lukewarm. Similarly, in case of heat, the water should be at room temperature and not ice-cold to avoid its harmful effects on the body.
