Doctors Ask Parents To Keep Their Child's Baby's Teeth

Importance of baby teeth

The fall of children's milk teeth occurs around 5/6 years old. A study published on PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America) reveals that baby teeth contain stem cells that can be renewed and produce several types of cells. In cell therapy, it is possible to graft healthy cells to restore the function of a tissue or organ. These cells can even rebuild organs like the liver and heart, but also help treat cancer or leukemia.

Stem cells with multiple powers

Stem cells from milk teeth are among the most powerful in the human body. Their spread intervenes rapidly and lasts unlike other stem cells in the human body. Possessing the capacity for regeneration and undifferentiation, stem cells derived from milk teeth can cure various diseases such as blood diseases,

neurodegenerative disorders, myocardial infarction and muscular dystrophy, among others.

In order to extract the stem cells from the milk teeth, they should ideally be pulled out before they fall and stored at minus 190 °. The full capacity of stem cells has certainly not been explored optimally yet. Maybe they could be used someday to cure Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease or diabetes.

These same stem cells could someday serve the child whose wisdom teeth were extracted in case of heart disease, brain disease or leukemia. They can effectively be used to repair damaged cells in these places and speed up the healing process without the risk of rejection of the body if a donor is used.

According to Sara Rankin, a biologist at Imperial College London, storing baby teeth is one of the least invasive ways to collect stem cells from humans. However, even if this practice could be revolutionary for health and could therefore prove very useful in the case of leukemia, among others, the conservation of stem cells for therapeutic purposes is prohibited in europe and condemned by the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies, but it is authorized in Switzerland and other countries in the world where it is proposed to keep the baby teeth in storage banks for a period of 25 to 75 years.

These storage banks have set up this system to help parents who want to keep their baby's milk teeth as soon as they fall. To avoid having to pull the tooth directly and as soon as it falls, it must be placed in the kit in question within 15 to 20 minutes, so as to prevent the pulp of the tooth from drying out.

All that remains is to contact the selected storage bank laboratory to arrange the removal of the kit within 72 hours after the tooth has fallen. When the laboratory receives it, tests to detect the presence of hepatitis, HIV, syphilis and HTLV are performed. An evaluation of the tooth is then performed to verify that it is healthy and that the dental pulp is viable for the extraction of stem cells. They are subsequently extracted and cultured and their growth is monitored to ensure the success of the process.

The conservation of the baby teeth could thus prove to be precious for the medical future and in particular for that our children.
