Before the marketing of a cosmetic product, it must above all meet the standards and regulatory requirements of the country where it is placed on the market. The company manufacturing and / or wanting to market a cosmetic product must ensure its safety through pre-targeted processes, especially for future consumers. In this respect, let us take the unfavorable example of the talcum powder manufactured and marketed by Johnson & Jonhson subject to legal proceedings because of the alleged association of its product with ovarian cancer.

Talc Causes Cancer According To Experts

Johnson & Johnson is a US pharmaceutical company that has been the subject of thousands of complaints and lawsuits over the past several years regarding its commercialized talcum powder, which has been shown to have some proven properties and application in the genital region. appearance of ovarian cancer.

Several lawsuits are still in progress and Johnson & Johnson is currently prosecuted in more than 4,800 proceedings brought by ovarian cancer consumers. The pharmaceutical group is accused of having concealed for purely commercial purposes the potential danger of its products and in particular of its talcum powder.

A toxic product

A study by ANSES revealed in 2012 that natural talc deposits could contain highly carcinogenic asbestos. However, since 1970 and if it is intended to be marketed as a hygiene product, talc must normally be purified in the United States and Europe.

The American Cancer Society has published numerous studies that have shown that talcum powder used in the genital area can promote the development of ovarian cancer. In fact, when the powder is applied near the vagina, it can circulate through the uterus and fallopian tubes, and then settle in the ovaries.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization also agree that the use of talcum powder in this sensitive area of the body could be carcinogenic.

Although Johnson & Johnson refuses to endorse any responsibility, despite the investigations claiming a link between the use of talc in personal hygiene and a higher incidence of cancer, according to the complainants, the Johnson group & Johnson was aware of the potential risks of globally marketed talc components without alerting consumers.

The group defends itself by asserting that there is no sufficient and tangible scientific evidence affirming the relationship between talcum powder and ovarian cancer.

Cancer Research, the organization supporting cancer research in the United Kingdom, stresses that the link between talc use and ovarian cancer is still confusing and that even if there is a risk, it is weak.

Another UK organization also focused on cancer research, says that the causes of ovarian cancer in relation to talcum powder from Johnson & Johnson are still unclear because they probably stem from the combination of various environmental factors and genetic and not just a product such as talc and therefore, it adds that it is not possible to confirm the veracity of this health scandal.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2006 classified talc as a potentially carcinogenic product when applied near the woman's genitals. Yet neither the US federal government nor the Johnson & Johnson group has taken steps to withdraw the product from the market, nor has it clearly alerted consumers.
