It is well known that calcium is essential to our health, it normalizes the function of muscles and nerves, regulates heartbeat, solidifies bone mass, prevents osteoporosis and promotes good sleep. Unfortunately, with a sedentary lifestyle, alcohol, soft drinks and coffee, calcium is drained from our body. That's why it's very important to constantly feed your body with calcium, thanks to egg shells!

Eggshells

What is an eggshell exactly?

What we consider to be the eggshell is actually made up of several layers including the following three. The first layer is the hard one that we usually throw away. This layer is composed almost entirely of calcium carbonate crystals. Although the shell is hard, it is actually a semi-permeable membrane, allowing air and moisture to pass through the nearly 17,000 tiny pores that cover its surface. The shell also has a very thin and outer layer called the cuticle. This layer serves as a screen, preventing dust and bacteria from getting through the pores and damaging the rest of the egg.

The third layer of the eggshell is called the inner membrane. This smooth, transparent membrane is made of protein and is both soft and strong. This inner membrane defends the egg yolk against bacterial invasion.

Can you eat eggshells?

The answer is yes. When thoroughly cleaned and properly prepared, the egg shells are edible. It is preferable in this case to opt for organic eggs. But why should we eat it? The answer is that an eggshell contains 90% calcium and is a pure, mineral-rich source. About 2.5 grams of eggshells should be enough to meet the daily calcium requirements of an adult. The chemical composition of the eggshell is very similar to that of human teeth and bones and that is why our body absorbs it very easily without forgetting its richness in copper, iron, zinc, magnesium and manganese.

Eggshell powder is an effective calcium supplement

Eggshells are composed of calcium carbonate, as well as small amounts of protein and other organic compounds. Calcium carbonate is the most common form of calcium in nature, forming shells, coral reefs and limestone.

Several studies, notably in Argentina and Japan, on rats and piglets confirm that eggshells are a rich source of calcium. In addition, they are absorbed as efficiently as pure calcium carbonate.

A 2003 study in Thailand conducted on isolated cells revealed that calcium uptake was up to 64% greater with eggshell powder compared to pure calcium carbonate. Researchers attributed these effects to some proteins found in egg shells.

How to prepare eggshell powder?

Eggshell powder can be prepared at home using a pestle and mortar, rolling pin or blender, and a sieve for sieving larger particles.

Make sure you clean the eggs, then boil them for 10 minutes to get rid of the bacteria. Once the eggs are cool, take the shells and grind them well by reducing them to powder and sieving them before mixing them with lemon juice or water, to be consumed in the morning on an empty stomach and before sleeping at night. . You can also add them to your food.

Benefits of Eggshell Powder

Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by bone weakness and an increased risk of bone fractures. Old age is one of the strongest risk factors for osteoporosis, but inadequate calcium intake can also contribute to bone loss and osteoporosis over time.

If your diet lacks calcium, adding eggshell powder is a great option. A study conducted in the Netherlands on postmenopausal women with osteoporosis found that taking eggshell powder, as well as vitamin D3 and magnesium, significantly enhanced their bones by improving bone mineral density.

Protect tooth enamel
In a research published in the Journal of Clinical & Diagnostic Research, eggshell powder was mixed in a solution of glycerine or a methylcellulose gel and applied to teeth that had been demineralized chemically. The results showed a new enamel growth for damaged teeth.

Caution :
It is important not to exceed 1000 mg of calcium per day otherwise you risk hypercalcemia; excessive calcium intake This can be manifested by: abdominal pain, vomiting and some confusion
