Diacetyl
A study by Harvard University allowed researchers to analyze liquids contained in 51 different electronic cigarettes, and they concluded that 76% of them contained diacetyl. Prolonged exposure or inhalation of diacetyl is known to cause bronchiolitis obliterans, also commonly known as the "popcorn seller's disease". This name is due to the fact that this chemical has been implicated in the appearance of this disease in several employees in the field of the manufacture of popcorn bags, since they inhaled this component for long hours. , everyday. The most common symptoms of this disease include: cough, fever, night sweats, shortness of breath without any physical effort, and sudden unexplained weight loss.
Propylene glycol
This is a kind of mineral oil very commonly used in the field of cosmetics. But although this substance is generally considered to be of low toxicity, the fact remains that a strong and long exposure to it is quite capable of causing irritation of the skin and mucous membranes.
Cases of intoxication have already been identified
In November 2015, in the Vaucluse, 13 children between 6 and 8 years old were victims of a serious intoxication after inhaling and probably drinking liquid for electronic cigarette, the incident also took place in a primary school of the city of Cavaillon.
A somewhat similar but more dramatic accident occurred in Israel in 2013, when a child only two years old drank the refill of an electronic cigarette. But the damage of these toxic substances did not stop there since in 2014, more than 1400 cases of poisoning could be declared in the United States following the ingestion of the same liquid.
This is mainly due to the presence of nicotine, which in addition to being quite addictive, is highly toxic. According to the ANSM, it is enough to ingest 40mg or to have a cutaneous contact with so that the result is fatal for an adult. It should be noted, however, that the European Parliament has issued a decision limiting the concentration of nicotine in electronic cigarette refills to 20mg / ml.
Some still have doubts about the danger that this e-cigarette represents
A study published in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research has shown that the liquid nicotine in these electronic cigarettes is the form of nicotine causing the most dependence, exceeding ordinary cigarettes.
However, other research conducted by an organization affiliated with the health authorities of Britain has shown that this new form of cigarette is 95% less dangerous than tobacco, but in the absence of scientific confirmation or follow-up, it is difficult to substantiate such an affirmation, which leaves it until now in the state of simple theory.
