The electronic cigarette, replica of the ordinary cigarette allows to diffuse purified nicotine by bringing the same physiological sensation and allows to reproduce the same gesture to the smoker. A way to offset the harmful effects of nicotine, carbon monoxide or tar in cigarettes, its electronic version composed of significant quantities of carcinogenic molecules would be just as harmful or even more, and the vapor it releases would have molecules that alter DNA.

The electronic cigarette increasingly popular with smokers and having invaded the global market due to the non-presence of substances such as benzene, arsenic, chromium, carbon monoxide and fine particles that tobacco has , it is more commonly used by smokers to overcome the harmfulness of traditional cigarettes and gradually reduce nicotine addiction. There are no less than 3 million users of E-cigarette representing 6% of the 15-75 age group.

The electronic cigarette as harmful as the traditional cigarette?
A recent preliminary study presented at the 256th National Meeting and Exhibition of the American Chemical Society highlights that e-cigarette vaping can alter the genetic process in the cells of the oral cavity of users, which could significantly increase the risk of developing cancer.

To detect exposures to potential chemicals released during vaping, researchers collected saliva samples from five e-cigarette users before and after a 15-minute vaping session and analyzed samples for known chemicals. and that could damage the DNA.

In order to test the possible long-term effects of vaping, the research team evaluated the DNA lesions in the cells of the mouths of the subjects participating in the study and used methods based on the spectrometry that they had. allowed to identify three compounds harmful to DNA. Formaldehyde, acrolein and methylglyoxal, the proportions of which increased in saliva after vaporization. Four of the five electronic cigarette users had increased DNA damage associated with acrolein exposure.

This type of injury occurs when toxic chemicals such as acrolein react with DNA. If the cell does not repair the damage so that DNA replication can take place, the cancer could have a good chance of developing.

Researchers in this preliminary study plan to conduct a larger-scale research involving more subjects and e-cigarette-related vaping effects tests. The research team also wants to highlight how the level of DNA adducts varies between users of electronic cigarettes and traditional cigarette smokers.

Another research team from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, wanted to measure DNA damage induced by nitrosamines (nitrogen and oxidized chemical compounds - nicotine derivatives) in different organs of mice exposed to cigarette smoke electronic.

And indeed, nitrosamine may involve the same effects and increase the mutational susceptibility and tumorigenic transformation of human bronchial epithelial and urothelial cells in culture.

These results therefore demonstrate that the nitrosation of nicotine is created in vivo in mice and that the smoke vapors released by the electronic cigarette are carcinogenic for the lung and bladder among others; which implies the possibility that these electronic cigarette vapors are harmful and contribute to the increased risk of vascular diseases and the risk of developing cancer.
