Researchers Recommend Putting On Your Socks During The Night

Can not sleep even after a long, hard day's work? Cold feet could be the reason behind your troubled sleep. When your feet are cold, they contract the blood vessels and circulate less blood. The solution ? Scientists advise wearing socks once in bed!

According to the National Sleep Foundation, warming your feet before sleeping helps your brain to clearly understand that it's time to sleep.

And the best way to warm your feet? Socks ! Wearing socks in bed is the safest way to keep your feet warm during the night.

Why wear socks in bed?

Warming cold feet causes vasodilatation (dilation of blood vessels) which may indicate to the brain that it is time to go to bed. Once the blood vessels of the hands and feet are dilated, the heat is redistributed throughout the body to prepare the oil.

According to a 2007 study conducted by the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience in the Netherlands, adults wearing normal socks or heated in bed fall asleep faster.

In fact, a person's body temperature falls during the night, reaching the lowest temperature around 4 o'clock in the morning. Warming feet and hands releases heat through the skin and helps lower core body temperature. This, in turn, sends a message to the brain that it is time to go to bed.

According to another study conducted in 2016 at the University of Basel, Switzerland, the researchers proved that it was a good thing to keep the socks at bedtime.

They examined the relationship between the temperature of the hands and feet and the speed with which people fall asleep. Thus, they tested their theory on a group of men, the majority fell asleep quickly when their feet were warm. They also found that once the blood vessels are dilated, the heat passes more quickly to the rest of the body, and thus allows people to fall asleep more quickly.

This discovery echoes the ancestral belief that falling asleep by placing a hot, hot footbath in the bed is good for sleep.

The benefits of putting socks in bed do not stop at sleep, this gesture can have many other benefits for your health.

Other benefits of wearing socks in bed

- Reduce the symptoms of Raynaud's disease
- Frequently cold hands and feet could be a sign of Raynaud's disease.

Raynaud's disease affects the blood vessels of the skin. It usually occurs when a person feels cold or stressed.

The blood flow between the hands and feet is then reduced. As a result, the fingers and toes start to feel cold and numb. They can also change color and become white or blue.

People who are suffering from Raynaud's disease for the first time should consult a doctor. Wearing socks in bed can help reduce the symptoms of this disease and stay warm all day long.

Prevent hot flashes
Many menopausal women may have hot flashes at times. Symptoms of this condition include:
  • A sudden sensation of intense heat that spreads through the body
  • Sweat
  • palpitations
  • Redness of the face

The ability of socks to lower body temperature during the night can also help prevent hot flashes. Indeed, it is thought that hot flashes are caused by hormonal fluctuations that affect the control of body temperature.

Best physical intimacy
According to a study conducted by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, the scanners revealed that couples who wore socks in bed were more likely to have an climax during intercourse.

The study looked at 13 couples aged 19 to 49, and examined their brain reactions during intercourse. Half of the couples were asked to lie down, their heads in a scanner, while their partner manually incited them to climax .

To ease the mood, the room lighting was reduced and all sources of noise were removed. The couples then changed roles and the experience was repeated.

The researchers found that cold feet prevented couples from reaching climax . While couples gave socks to couples, about 80% of couples were able to reach climax , compared to 50% previously in this staged environment.
