A study conducted by The Journal of Evolutionary Biology asked 8520 women to rate a group of men at different stages of facial hair: beardless, beard after 5 days, beard after 10 days, and finally beard after 4 weeks of growth. These women had to rank the men with whom they would most likely pursue a long-term romantic relationship with those who would be less interested.
After watching the pictures of the subjects at different stages, a majority of women opted for the 4-week-old beards first, followed by the 10-day beard, the 5-day beard, and finally the completely shaven face. In an article relayed by our colleagues in the New York Post, the beard is identified as an assurance perceived by the woman about the ability of man to support himself and to compete with other males. According to this study, bearded men return a more aggressive and socially dominant image of masculinity compared to their peers.
