Are you rather dark chocolate or milk chocolate? Or maybe you're an amateur chocolate bar? Whatever your preference, know that chocolate is not only delicious in the mouth but it is one of the most beneficial foods for our health. Indeed, as relayed by our fellow Figaro Health and Selection magazine, several researchers were particularly interested in dark chocolate and its benefits for the brain, heart and skin. Let's find them.

In an article by Professor Henri Joyeux, he explains that chocolate is rich in antioxidants and contains four times more antioxidants than black tea. Premium dark chocolate with a high cocoa content is quite nutritious because it contains a significant amount of soluble fiber and is loaded with minerals. Chocolate is one of the few foods with an incomparable flavor that also provides significant health benefits.

Dark chocolate can be good for your brain

Scientists believe that some key chocolate ingredients have lasting positive effects on the human brain including flavanols. Present in other foods such as pears, apples and tea, these compounds are known to improve cardiovascular health and cognitive performance as stated by Pr Henri Joyeux.

A study conducted at the University of L'Aquila in L'Aquila, Italy, revealed that these flavanols directly affect an individual's ability to concentrate and assimilate information, something that allows them to be better preserved and better understand them. Reading comprehension and memory increase with the help of flavanols.

It has also been proven that cocoa can significantly improve cognitive function in older people with mental disabilities. It could also improve fluency and several disease risk factors.

Dark chocolate can be good for your heart
The bioactive compounds found in cocoa can improve blood flow in the arteries and lead to a significant decrease in blood pressure.

A study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition cited recorded observations showing low blood pressure in healthy individuals after consuming dark chocolate, as well as increased insulin sensitivity, insulin resistance reduced and a lower risk of blood clotting.

These studies do not necessarily show that chocolate has the same effects on people who already struggle with cardiovascular disease or diabetes, so it does not replace conventional treatment. But the properties of dark chocolate specifically improve the health of the heart and blood vessels.

Chocolate can help you have healthy skin
Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, which are great for maintaining healthy skin. You can use chocolate-based facial scrubs, or eat a small amount daily. According to an article in the journal Antioxidants and Redox Signaling, these antioxidant properties can protect the skin against UV rays and the damage they cause.

Studies show that cocoa flavanols can improve blood flow to the skin and protect it from sun damage.

In order to fully enjoy the benefits of dark chocolate, be sure to consume it in moderation as added sugar and over-consumption of energy can be detrimental to your health in the long run.

It's time to share this article to tell your friends about the benefits of this treat!
