Long before the concepts of character and personality, the ancient Greek theorists had introduced the idea that there were four different types of temperament. The psychology of temperament is therefore one of the oldest methods of explaining human behavior. Invented by the Greek physician Aelius Galenus, the basic moods were, according to him, likely to cause various diseases if they were unbalanced. But what is temperament? And how do these predominant moods define your personality?

In reality, temperament is an integral part of the character of a human being. Thus, it may be fashioned but never modified. It is actually an aspect of the personality, influenced by the intensity and speed of emotional reactions.

Ancestral to the "Big Five" theory, the notion of temperament was developed from an earlier psychological theory of four basic body fluids: blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. According to their predominance in an individual, they would be expected to produce temperaments designated as sanguine, phlegmatic, melancholic or angry.

Understand the temperament to better adapt to the personality

Have you ever heard parents say that such an infant was calmer or more agitated than his or her brother or sister at the same age? In fact, unlike the personality that evolves according to the experiences of life, temperament is an innate quality perceptible soon after birth.

Moreover, this notion has attracted attention in terms of biological determinants for many years. In fact, children manifest distinctive behaviors early in their development. Some are stubborn and cranky when others are naturally happy and playful. Thus, temperament refers to certain aspects of the personality with which we are born. They are both innate and enduring, and are determined by specific behavioral patterns.

What kind of Temperament is yours?

1- The blood temperament
People who are in a bloody mood are good people. Optimistic, lively and carefree, they do not hesitate to take risks and go on an adventure. Also, this kind of people do not support the routine and monotony of everyday life. As a result, they constantly need change and renewal. Hedonists, these individuals are constantly looking for pleasure and voluptuousness. Creative, they have all the qualities to become great artists. Nevertheless, their fiery and impulsive nature sometimes pushes them towards risky and unthinking choices.

2- The phlegmatic temperament
Phlegmatic temperaments are empathic and generous. They do not hesitate to help those who ask for it and cooperate with others to carry out this task. Passionate about associative work, they nevertheless tend not to be very ambitious and are usually of a rather passive nature. Introverted, calm and reserved, these people are patient and easygoing. The phlegmatic are therefore conciliatory and have no trouble adapting to the needs and desires of people who share their daily lives.

3- Angry temperament
Angry individuals are usually results-oriented. Pragmatic, they only have to make use of the means as long as the goal is reached. Blossoming in an antagonistic environment, they have no trouble influencing others by overcoming all oppositions that block their way. Extraverted, practical and voluntary, they are independent and proclaim their freedom of thought. Honest and direct, they have no trouble communicating things and are the first to say aloud what everyone thinks in a whisper. Visionaries, they are never short of ideas, plans or goals.

4- Melancholy temperament
The melancholic temperament is focused on quality. Indeed, the melancholy people do not try to be right, but rather try to understand what is right. Naturally shy and cautious, these people are however the first to want to relax the atmosphere and defuse the ambient pressure. Conformists, they have no problem adhering to the rules and sticking to predefined standards. Attention to detail, they leave nothing to chance and refer to a predetermined plan for their every move.
