Very often, when we feel unwell or suffer from a health problem, we go directly to our doctor. Indeed, we give blind trust to this health professional to advise us and treat our ills. Nevertheless, things do not always go as planned. In a shocking testimony relayed by The Sun, a woman dies after her dentist has removed 10 teeth.

A dentist, known as Tushar Patel, was treating a patient who was suffering from gingivitis. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned.

An surgery that went wrong
Dr. Tushar Patel had nearly 30 years of experience in the field of dental health. Her patient, whose anonymity will be respected, suffered from gingivitis, a periodontal disease at an advanced stage.

She then went to Dr. Patel's home to treat her teeth. As well, the patient reported that she had a rare blood disorder and was taking anticoagulant medication. Without evaluating the potential risks of the surgery, Dr. Patel removed all the upper teeth in just one week. Indeed, he extracted 5 teeth at the first appointment and five more five days later. Following the second surgery, the patient experienced significant bleeding in her mouth. On the same day, she was admitted to King's College Hospital. The next day, she succumbed to her injuries and gave up her last breath.

A poor assessment of the risks involved
Following the death of the patient, an investigation was initiated to elucidate the course of the incident. According to a report from the General Council of Dental Physicians: "These are fundamental errors that exposed the patient to a significant risk of harm, whereas it could and should have been avoided".

In fact, the doctor knew that his patient was taking anticoagulant medication and that this exposed him to potential risks. She had even filled out a form indicating her medical history, but he did not seem to take it into account. Thus, the report states that the doctor did not proceed with the necessary instructions and the required verifications before proceeding with the surgery.

"It was not a simple mistake, but an accumulation of mistakes," says the report of the General Council of Dentists. The doctor was anxious to apologize to the family of the deceased by recognizing his shortcomings. But the woman's sister, bereaved, told the Metro site, "He may still be a dentist in a year, when we will be without her forever."

More and more deaths are due to medical mistakes
Claude Rambaud, author of "To treat too sick" considers that the medical errors could be the 3rd cause of mortality in France. This alarming finding is marked by figures from the World Health Organization that reveals that one out of 300 patients dies in hospital because of a medical error.

In addition, it seems that a lack of transparency could be at the root of this scourge. Indeed, specialists who follow the same patient do not always communicate with each other to provide adequate treatment. In addition, it is not always easy to know the medical history of a patient to assess the risks of certain care. Claude Rambaud proposes to set up a device that would make it possible to trace the surgeries, the allergies, the care and all the interventions that a patient has undergone. Like the United States, the implementation of such monitoring would help to ensure optimal treatment according to the specification of each case.

In addition, the author highlights the importance of the role of the patient with his doctor. It is important for the patient to be proactive, to ask questions and to be attentive.
