How To Make Protective Masks At Home, With Or Without A Sewing Machine

At a time when caution is required to protect his health and that of his loved ones, it is essential to apply the recommended prevention measures. Among them, wearing a mask to avoid contact or projection of droplets infected with virus. The interest of this hygienic precaution is significant when it is applied in parallel with barrier gestures and measures of social distancing established by the health authorities. For this purpose, making your own mask at home can be beneficial when these are lacking.

The purpose of these masks is to reduce the risk of contamination, without being as effective as FFP masks or surgical masks. Despite everything and in order to put the odds on its side, their wearing is highly recommended as underlined by our colleagues from Paris. "Whether they are" handcrafted "or designed with plexiglass to make a" screen ", made of washable and reusable fabric ... it doesn't matter, according to the doctors, as long as you wear one to go out" reveals the daily.

In addition, the National Academy of Medicine wished to recall in a press release that it was “possible, in each family, to make masks in artisanal fabric, alternative, screens or barriers, washable and reusable from common inexpensive materials ”.

For this purpose, here are 3 methods to make your own homemade mask. The first 2, quite fast, are ideal for those who do not have a sewing machine at home. The third requires this sewing device but can provide you with a more solid mask.

- 1st method: paper mask (without sewing machine)
This was proposed by an expert in biological and infectious risk and former Doctor of the Army Health Service. To proceed, you will need:
  • Paper towel (or paper towel)
  • A stapler
  • Elastic band

Before touching anything, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use hydroalcoholic gel.

To make this mask, you will need to open your paper towel, then fold it into an accordion.

Take two elastic bands and place one at each end.
Fold over your piece of paper and staple at this level so that the rubber bands do not fall.

- 2nd method: Bandana mask
Quickly going viral on social networks, this technique stood out for its simplicity and speed of execution. Indeed, if you don't have a sewing machine, you can make your own homemade mask using a simple bandana and a pair of elastic bands.

1.To do this, take your fabric and fold it several times until you get a medium-sized strip.

2. Then place an elastic band at each end of your band, leaving the fabric protruding, then fold it over the back of your mask by inserting it into the hollow formed by the opposite fold.

Note: This mask can only be used for a few hours and requires high temperature washing after each use.

- 3rd method: Cloth mask (with sewing machine)

To prepare a fabric mask, you will need:
  • 2 elastic band
  • Scissors
  • Fabric in good condition at 20 cm wide and 12 cm high
  • A thin metal rod, wire (to pinch the mask at the nose)
  • Wire and pins
  • Sewing machine

1.Take your fabric and fold it in half before inserting a metal wire in the middle and sewing below the fold so that it stays in place. (Your fabric is preferably rectangular in shape).

2.Fold three times one of the two sides of your fabric in an "accordion" so that each fold is 2 cm. To keep your folds in place, insert a pin at the end of each fold. Repeat the same operation for the other side.

3.Cut the excess fabric at the bottom of your rectangle then sew by machine 2 cm from the border.

5.Finally, sew one side of the elastic at the top of one of the 2 sides of your rectangle, and fix its end about 1 inche from the bottom of the mask.

6. Repeat this operation with a second elastic band, on the second side of the rectangle.
